SUMMARY:Lower Smith River Volunteer Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:Spend a few hours with Smith River Alliance and Tolowa Dee-Ni’ Nation on the Smith River to retrieve trash that is only reachable by boat. Volunteers will meet at the Fred Haight Boat Ramp for a safety talk before getting in the water and finding their way to Ship Ashore\, retrieving and removing trash on their way there. Volunteers interested in helping on land will have the opportunity to help remove trash from areas accessible by car and foot. \nRegistration is required and space is limited. Please RSVP early to reserve a kayak or space on a boat. If you have your own boat or kayak that you would like to utilize\, please let us know in the RSVP below or by emailing staff. \nThe Smith River is the crown jewel of the Wild and Scenic River System. More than 300 miles of the Smith River drainage are designated wild and scenic\, making it one of the most complete river systems in the National System. The emerald-green Smith River flows freely and naturally\, without a single dam for its entire length. It is the only major river system in California to do so. It is known for its excellent whitewater rafting opportunities\, clear emerald waters and its record-breaking Steelhead trout and Salmon. \nYour safety is very important to us during every event that we host. For this reason\, we ask that you please: \n\nBring closed toe shoes during the event\, this helps protect your feet from heavy or sharp objects.\nBring a water bottle and sunscreen. This will help us in reducing single-use plastics.\nBring your own preferred gloves. We will have gloves available as well.\nStay home if you are feeling sick. SUMMARY:Volunteer Work Party at Rock Creek Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Lend a hand at Rock Creek Ranch! Located on a sweeping bend of the Wild and Scenic South Fork of the Smith River\, in the spectacular Redwood country of Northern California. \nRock Creek Ranch is a 175-acre property is home to native coastal cutthroat trout\, steelhead trout\, as well as Chinook and Coho Salmon. Douglas Fir\, Huckleberry and Laurel Bay prosper at Rock Creek Ranch\, if left unchecked can become a fire hazard as ladder fuel for potential fires. \nThis volunteer work party will support a healthy forest by helping reduce fuels and making the ranch more fire-resilient. Volunteers will use hand tools to prune and cut back brush and small trees\, as well as carry brush to a designated spot for future burning. \nYour safety is very important to us during every event that we host. SUMMARY:South Fork Canyon Wildfire Preparedness Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Smith River Alliance will host the annual South Fork Canyon Wildfire Preparedness Meeting at Rock Creek Ranch (Outdoor Use Area) on Saturday\, April 1\, 2023. The meeting will be from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M.. Pizza and light refreshments will be provided. \nThis meeting will focus on defensible space\, “home hardening”\, wildfire prevention field guides\, as well as a tour of the preventative measures being used at Rock Creek Ranch. Some of these measures include home hardening like reducing fuels around buildings and showcasing its means of stopping uncontrolled fires through its water systems. \nPartners and co-hosts for this event include the Del Norte Fire Safe Council\, the Smith River National Recreation Area\, and CalFire. \nFor more information and to RSVP\, please contact Grant at Grant@smithriveralliance.org.

DESCRIPTION:Smith River Alliance\, California Department of Fish and Wildlife\, and partners are pleased to invite you to learn more about the Lower Elk Creek Wetland Enhancement Project planning effort. The project is primarily located on the Elk Creek Wetlands Wildlife Area\, which is upstream of Highway 101 on the east side of Crescent City in Del Norte County. Restoration is needed in Elk Creek due to its urban interface and history of alteration which have reduced the quantity and quality of habitat for fish and wildlife. Projects that improve water quality and enhance fish and wildlife habitat can also build a more climate-resilient community.
