An international mining company has plans to develop a nickel strip mine in the headwaters of the Wild and Scenic North Fork Smith River. The Red Flat Nickel Corporation would locate the mine in the Baldface Creek watershed, a key tributary to the North Fork Smith. Baldface Creek is important for Chinook salmon and steelhead, and is a known hot spot for the endangered Coho salmon. The Smith River and its tributaries are a salmon stronghold and the proposed mining would contaminate the headwaters of the Smith River --- polluting protected areas and the water supply for communities downstream.
We oppose strip mining – it’s bad for the Smith, its people, and the fish.
