Salmon Strongholds Threatened by Strip Mining

Fans and supporters in Gold Beach Oregon welcome and appreciate Senator Wyden and Congresswoman Hoyle on July 29 for their work to protect the rivers of America’s Wild Rivers Coast.

Salmonid populations depend on the cool, clean waters of the Smith and other Salmon Stronghold rivers.

The Smith River is one of several salmon stronghold rivers within the Klamath Mountains threatened by strip mining in their headwaters. The threat is real enough that adjacent rural conservative communities, Chambers of Commerce, state and national organizations, and tens of thousands of citizens have come together in support of legislation to protect these headwaters areas from new mining claims and future strip-mining proposals.
